Presentation

Saint Philbert Church, near the château, was built at the end of the 11th century on the foundations of a former Benedictine abbey. The church’s choir area is Roman in style whilst the nave is Gothic. The crypt beneath the choir is listed as a Monument Historique and is the last relic of the monastery founded by the monk, Saint Philbert, around 674.

Visitors come to pay tribute to the saint’s relics. In the centre, an impressive empty tomb which was made after Saint Philbert’s body was transported to Tournus during the 9th century Norman invasions. Two 17th century altarpieces are on display: a painting of the Miraculous Draught of Fish donated by Napoléon III and a ship model from Lieutenant Jacobsen.

Free visit of the church and the crypt every day from 9am to 7pm.
