Château de Noirmoutier

An imposing 12th-century fortress, listed as a historic monument, the castle is a remarkable piece of heritage. Together with the Church of Saint-Philbert, just a stone’s throw away, it forms the historic heart of the island, bearing witness to the past and, in particular, to the War in the Vendée. The castle is a museum. The collections are linked to the island’s history, such as Julien Le Blant’s painting, *The Death of General d’Elbée* (on loan from the National Centre for Visual Arts), depicting the soldier’s execution in front of the castle in 1794.

A new exhibition is held every year. In 2026: ‘Hoist the Sails! When Men Set Sail’ will tell the story of the island’s seafarers. This exhibition invites visitors to embark on a journey into the lives of seafarers from the 19th and 20th centuries. Through artefacts, illustrations and installations, it pays tribute to these men who shaped maritime history: their epic voyages at sea, their majestic ships, their meticulous models, but also their legendary solidarity and, at times, their solitude in the face of the vastness of the ocean. Open from 4 April to 15 November 2026.
April, May, June, September, the All Saints’ Day holidays and from 11 to 15 November: open daily, except Fridays, from 10.00 am to 12.30 pm and from 2.30 pm to 6.00 pm. The courtyard remains open every day from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm, and on Fridays from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm.

July and August: open every day from 10.00 am to 7.00 pm (including the courtyard).

Year-round drop-in sessions run by the Friends of Noirmoutier Island within the castle grounds (Logis du Gouverneur): Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2.30 pm to 5 pm. Tel.: 02 51 39 54 54. This association was founded in 1934 with the aim of collecting and preserving the archives of the island of Noirmoutier.
