Overview
Opened on 19 May 2019, a new museum – the Hôtel Jacobsen, Centre for Maritime Heritage – welcomes you on a tour through 10 galleries. Thanks to new technologies and the latest scientific findings, maritime heritage in all its various forms is brought to life for you:
- an animated map showing the island’s formation
- screens showing interviews about the polders, the Passage du Gois and coastal defences
- the decorative arts gallery (port furniture, Chinese porcelain, etc.)
- navigation and trade
- the rise of seaside resorts… are showcased in a shipowner’s mansion dating from 1761, which was extended around 1802 and is listed as a Historic Monument for its neoclassical décor, panelling and rooms adorned with 18th-century wallpaper, all of which have been restored and refurnished.
This year, the Hôtel Jacobsen is hosting two temporary exhibitions:
From February to June 2026: “Sea and Poetry of Noirmoutier”: a poetic journey: Extracts from the works of Lidener (Lubin Impost (1790–1861)). Discover excerpts from poems dedicated to the island and the sea by this member of the Académie Ambulante, who collected plants and catalogued the island’s species during the first third of the 19th century. A leisurely stroll to discover the island’s charms during the Romantic era.
From 1 July to 30 September 2026: “Jean Simian (1910–1991): painter of North Africa, Spain, Paris and Noirmoutier”. A selection of works from the artist’s studio: landscapes, still lifes and scenes of everyday life by this important ‘surnaturalist’ artist, on display in the rooms of the Hôtel Jacobsen, the Maritime Heritage Centre.
Guided tours available on request or by booking.

An additional €3 per person per tour, for groups of at least two people.

Free for children under 6 and people with disabilities (on presentation of proof) and their accompanying person.

Accessible to people with reduced mobility (lift). Accessible to the hard of hearing. Suitable for pushchairs. The exhibits are translated into English and German.
