CYCLING TRAILS

With 83 km of cycling trails and a flat topography (highest elevation at 23 metres above sea level), Noirmoutier Island is paradise for lovers of cycling. 20 km of cycling paths – reserved for cyclists, pedestrians and rollerbladers – run along the edges of nature sites and invite you to completely immerse yourself in nature, safe from car traffic. Perfect for an outing with the family! Bicycle lanes have also been set up along roadsides. Shared lanes cover small stretches and agricultural paths with little traffic. A complete map of the island’s cycling trails is available from the two bureaux run by the Tourist Information Office. And to safely travel by bicycle on Noirmoutier Island, be sure to follow the code of good conduct.

FROM GOIS TO FORESTS

Distance: 23.3 km
Time: Approx. 2½ hours
Skill level: Families
Waymarking: Ile de Noirmoutier à vélo (blue marks)

Start out from the Barbâtre Tourist Information Office. After riding along the agricultural plains, you will discover the preserved site of the Sébastopol Polder, a listed regional nature reserve. By the Gois Passage, you’ll be ready for a break to catch your breath. Next, you’ll cross the four-lane road to head towards the pine forest, the dunes and the town of Barbâtre. You will then follow the path along the edges of the Tresson Dunes, before crossing over at the Bonhomme roundabout. As the tide goes out, Bonhomme Port sets the stage for its traditional ballet of tractors going to the oyster farms for the working tide. There, you can sample some oysters in an oyster hut before returning to your starting point.
